Welcome to Barbour County, Alabama!

We are a community that is rare to find these days. We are blessed with a rich past that we are so proud of, but also excited to see what the future will bring. Located in beautiful southeast Alabama, Barbour County is a community that has a little bit of everything. Serene landscapes, rich history, strong industry, low crime rates, and mild weather are only a few of the benefits of life in Barbour County.

Barbour County is named after former Governor of Virginia, James Barbour. It was created in 1832 and was formed from a former Creek Indian Territory and a portion of Pike County. Clayton was named the county seat in 1834 because of its centralized location in the county. By the 1870s, the city of Eufaula grew and sparked many debates as whether to move the county seat or not. In 1879, Barbour County established two courts, one in the city of Clayton and the other in the city of Eufaula. Both courthouses remain in operation today. The county has fewer than 30,000 people and covers about 905 square miles.

Steeped in tradition we have many festivals that celebrate our rich history. Most famous and widely celebrated is "The Eufaula Pilgrimage" that takes place every April. We take you back in time to a period of Yankee invasions, cotton plantations and homegrown entertainment. Experience true Barbour County southern hospitality from our local Southern Belle's that are decked out in traditional hoop skirts and giving tours of our historical homes. They will share bits of history as you get to experience a piece of the past.

Don't forget the beautiful waters of Lake Eufaula! It's the perfect place to catch that award winning largemouth bass or just sit back and enjoy the cool evenings and beautiful sunsets! We invite you to take a closer look at what makes Barbour County a great place to live: pleasant quality of life, stable, long-standing communities, and affordable cost of living!
